This symposium was organized under the auspices of the Dutch Foundation for Postgraduate Medical Courses in Indonesia. Since 1986 foundation has organized postgraduate medical courses at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta and at the Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya in a continous collaboration with the staff of the medical faculties of both universities. 

The main purpose of the foundation is to support health care in Indonesia by sharing medical expertise in fields indicated by Indonesian physicians. This is done by postgraduate medical courses and symposia in which Dutch and Indonesians actively participate. Dutch medical specialists, who generously contribute their time and expertise, give the courses.

The foundation was instituded in 1986 on the initative of H.R.H.Prince Claus of The Netherlands and Professor Dr. W.J.F. Beks,neurosurgen in Groningen. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science pledged financial support. From the beginning Indonesian counterparts in Jakarta and Surabaya were Heavily involved in this initiatcive and the subsequent continuous collaboration during the past years.

All courses are given twice, i.e. in Jakarta and in Surabaya, to allow the attendance of participants from the wastern and eastern parts of Indonesia, respectively. Apart from the Indonesian Contributions the courses are identical. The topics are chosen as a results of trilateral discussions between Jakarta, Surabaya and board of the Foundation.

From the beginning the Foundation has benefitted from the financial support of the match Dutch Ministry of Education, culture and science, Philips Medical Systems The Netherlands and Shell International Petroleum Co Ltd. Fortunately, over the years these sponsors were joined by several others. For the present courses the foundation received financial support from the following donors: ING bank, Achmea Holding, Philips Healthcare and Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
